East Hawai‘i Hiroshima Kenjin Kai Awards $1,000 Scholarship to Abbie Takamine

Waiākea High School senior Abbie Takamine has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the East Hawai‘i Hiroshima Kenjin Kai for excellence in academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular achievements.
The EHHKK scholarship award was presented to Takamine during the Waiākea High School Senior Awards ceremony on May 6. 

Takamine was the captain of the Waiākea High School Varsity Girls Tennis team (2023-2025), Student Government Association councilmember, chairperson of the Homecoming Event (2023-2025), Class Council member; chairperson of class concession events (2021-2025), and a member of the National Honor Society (2023-2025).

Other achievements include: WHS Academic Achievement Award (2022-24), WHS Outstanding Service Award (2023-24), Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Tennis State Tournament Girls Qualifier (2023-24), Hilo Hongwanji Bishop Award (2021)BLS CPR, OSHA, and HIPAA Certified (2024). 

Her extracurricular activities include: Volunteer WHS Healthy Keiki Fun Run, Hilo Jr Tennis – Orange and Green Dot Event, Hilo Medical Center Skin Cancer Screening, Memorial Day Leis, Special Olympics and Junior Achievement. She was also an intern with Dr. Peter Matsuura during her senior year. 

Takamine is the daughter of EHHKK members Craig and Audrey Takamine and she plans to become an orthopaedic surgeon.  She will be attending the University of Portland in the fall.

The EHHKK scholarships are awarded to qualified East Hawai‘i public or private high school seniors who will be attending an accredited college or university, registering as a full-time student with 12 credits or more in the 2025-2026 academic year. Scholarships will be applied to tuition, room and board, or other eligible expenses at the college or university of the applicant’s choice.

The applicant must be a child of an East Hawai‘i Hiroshima Kenjin Kai member in good standing (dues paid). Bonus points may be awarded to those applicants who demonstrate financial need and/or active participation in the EHHKK organization by the applicant, applicant’s parent(s) or grandparent(s). Applications are available in the spring from East Hawai‘i public and private school counselors.
