The Consulate General of Japan in Honolulu is pleased to announce the opening of the Japan Foundation
Traveling Exhibition “Yokai Parade: Supernatural Monsters from Japan,” in cooperation with the Japan Foundation and the Hawaii Japanese Center (Hilo, Island of Hawai‘i).
This unique exhibition presents the diverse and evolving world of yokai—supernatural creatures from Japanese folklore—through a wide array of media. Curated under the supervision of Mr. Goichi Yumoto, Honorary Director of the Miyoshi Mononoke Museum in Hiroshima Prefecture, the exhibition features traditional materials such as picture scrolls and nishiki-e (multicolored woodblock prints), alongside toys, posters, and films that show how yokai have transformed over time.
Mysterious and unexplainable beings have long appeared in cultures across the globe. In Japan, yokai emerged as symbolic representations of supernatural forces and have captivated the public imagination for centuries.
